According to Medline Plus, a service of the National Library of Medicine, antacids (sodium bicarbonate) "should not be given to young children (up to 6 years of age) unless prescribed by their doctor". Since children often cannot describe their symptoms well, doctor visits are advisable before giving any antacids to children.

Medline also warns against taking sodium bicarbonate with large amounts of milk or milk products. To do so may increase the chance of side effects.

Anyone tried colic calm? Is it safe?
I just bought some and wanted to know if anyone had any good experiences with it.. is it safe? Should I use it on an empty stomach or during a meltdown? Should I be concerned about the color of it?

Answer:
Yes, I have used it several times on my 2 month old when he is very gassy and crying. I can honestly say that he loves the taste of it and it seems to work well, as he's always quit crying within 5 or so minutes of us giving it to him. The dark/black color is due to one of the ingredients in the stuff... I don't remember what... I have spilled it once on the carpet (white carpet), but it came out pretty easily. It does make his poop a forest green color, though.
